$$ | 4 GB | Unlimited talk and text |
$$$ | 8 GB | Unlimited talk and text |
Each Fizz Mobile plan is customizable, so if you’re the type of consumer who wants and values flexibility, this is a great choice for you. You can customize your plan by starting with one of Fizz Mobile’s plans or you can start from scratch—either way, you have the opportunity to pay for exactly what you need. When customizing a plan, you can choose where you get coverage – in Quebec, throughout Canada, or in both Canada and the US. The Quebec-only plan is the cheapest, while the Canada and US/Canada options are more expensive, but still affordable all things considered. With this in mind, Fizz gives you more bang for your buck compared to major carriers like Bell, Rogers, and Telus. The same is also true of Fizz Mobile’s parent company, Videotron—Fizz’s prices tend to run a bit cheaper and include more data.
Who can sign up for a Fizz Mobile plan?
It’s important to note that only residents of Quebec or Ottawa area are eligible to sign up for a Fizz Mobile plan. If you live in one of these areas, you’re in luck. Not only is Fizz Mobile a great alternative to larger carriers, but you’re set up to receive reliable coverage in your area and nationwide thanks to Rogers’ robust network.
Fizz Mobile coverage map
Fizz runs on Videotron’s network throughout Quebec and Ottawa and if you travel outside of Videotron’s network, your phone will run on Rogers’ powerful network at no extra charge. Fizz Mobile works the same way as Videotron – both switch over to operate on Rogers’ network when you travel outside of Quebec and Ottawa. To view Fizz’s coverage, visit our interactive map, and scroll to your area. Fizz Mobile, thanks to Rogers’ robust network, has 19.9% physical coverage and covers 97% of the population. Before committing to a Fizz plan, you’ll want to make sure you’ll have coverage where you live and frequently travel. You can check your coverage by inputting your address into our coverage tool.
Where can you use your Fizz Mobile plan?
You can purchase and use a Fizz Mobile plan if you live in Quebec or Ottawa. When you subscribe to your plan you have an option to select your coverage area. You can select from the following options:
-
- Quebec
- Canada
- US + Canada
If you travel outside of the coverage area you selected when you signed up for service, you will need to either pay as you go for talk, text, and data, which could get pricey, or buy a travel add-on or an international calling add-on. As such, it’s probably not the best idea to choose the Quebec-only option unless you know that you will almost never travel outside of Quebec.
One caveat, though, is that regardless of which subscription you choose, the majority of your usage must be done on Fizz’s main network (as opposed to Rogers’). So, even if you chose the Canada/US option, you are still limited to how often you can use Rogers’ network when roaming outside of Fizz’s network. Fizz states that it reserves the right to interrupt or block access to Rogers’ network if you’re using your service primarily on Rogers’ network. Because of this, Fizz Mobile probably isn’t the best carrier for you if you travel a lot for work or leisure since there’s a chance your service may be cut off when traveling.
Checking your Fizz coverage before you travel
If you want to know whether a certain area will be covered by your Fizz plan, you can check prior to traveling. Simply open your Fizz account under your mobile plan and click on “Manage/Add-ons” and enter the destination you’ll be traveling to. If it doesn’t pull up a search result, that location is covered under your Fizz plan. On the other hand, if your search result pulls up a variety or prices and options, that means the destination is not covered and you’ll have to pay to use your phone in that location.
If traveling outside of your selected coverage area, you’ll need to buy add-ons or pay as you go. To use the pay as you go feature, go to:
- “My Plans” in your Fizz account
- Select the plan you wish to modify
- Click the “Manage” button
- Click on “Wallet”
It’s worth mentioning that you can only use pay as you go if you have money in your Fizz Wallet, so if your funds are low, refill your balance so you can pay for data, calls, texts, international calls, and roaming as you go! Avoid extra fees by signing up for the email and text alerts that keep you updated on your data usage. The Fizz Mobile network will notify you when your plan is run out and you need to replenish.
How to switch to Fizz Mobile and BYOD
When you decide to switch to Fizz Mobile there’s one thing to keep in mind: you must bring your own device (BYOD), meaning you can’t purchase a phone through its site. If you’re looking to buy a new device, you may want to consider choosing a different carrier or buying one directly from the manufacturer then bringing it to Fizz. Bringing your own phone is easy and can save you money since you don’t need to buy a new phone. In order to switch Fizz and BYO phone, make sure your phone is unlocked. The good news is that if the phone is for the Canadian market, it should be compatible. As an extra measure of precaution, be sure to check and see if your phone is compatible before joining the Fizz mobile network.
In order to be compatible, your phone needs to meet a few criteria:
-
- Androids: Most Android phones from the past 5 years are compatible with the Fizz Mobile network.
- iPhones: iPhones newer than the iPhone 5s are compatible with Fizz’s network.
- Operating system: Make sure your phone is running the latest operating system before connecting to the Fizz network.
- Carrier settings: If you’ve updated the software on your iPhone, your phone will offer a carrier settings update to Fizz 34.1 or higher that you must accept.
How do I change my Fizz Mobile plan?
You can change your Fizz Mobile plan at any time simply by logging into your account. A point often overlooked is that the changes you make will take effect at the beginning of your next payment cycle, not on the date of your change.
To change your plan:
- Go to “My Plans” in your Fizz account.
- Scroll to the plan you wish to change.
- Click on “Manage” and then “Adjust your plan.”
- Use the “Plan Wizard” to adjust your data, minutes, texts and Calling Options (international calls and voicemail).
- As you adjust your plan details, you will see your new monthly fee in the box below.
- When you like what you see, click “Save Changes.”
- Changes take effect at the start of your next payment cycle.
How does Fizz compare to other mid- and low-tier carriers?
Fizz Mobile’s prices and features are competitive with carriers like Virgin Mobile and Lucky Mobile (Bell), Fido and Chatr (Rogers), and Koodo and Public Mobile (Telus). Most of these small carriers do not require a pesky credit check, which is always great news (with the exception of Koodo and Fido). While Chatr and Public Mobile offer the cheapest prices on the market, Fizz is a better option for people who want high-speed data. This is because Public Mobile and Chatr only offer 3G speeds while Fizz offers 4G LTE (its website claims speeds up to 150Mbps in certain areas). As the world of communication continues to evolve, 3G speeds likely won’t suffice for most of your wireless needs, such as streaming video and music, video chatting, gaming, and browsing social media.
